Ashtanga
Mary Flinn
Mary has been teaching yoga since 1995. She began studying
Mysore style Ashtanga yoga in New York 1997. In 2000 she practiced
with Pattabhi Jois in NY, and continued each year until she went
to AYRI in India to study with Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Rangaswami and
Saraswati. She spent ten months in Mysore from October of 1995 until
February of 2007. In January of 2007 she was authorized to teach
Ashtanga Yoga from Pattabhi Jois and the AYRI. While in India
she studied yoga philosophy and pranayama with Shankaranarayan Jois. Along
with her Ashtanga practices she has studied Kundalini and White Tantric
yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. In 1997 she studied yoga at 'The
Divine Life Society-Sivananda' in Rishikesh India, and received a certificate
to teach from Swami Madhavananda and Swami Krishna.
Mary has an MFA from Queens College in NY. She
has had numerous one Woman art exhibitions in NY, as well
as shows in Maryland, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
Mary has been a model for Dorlin Kinersly books "Kundalini
Yoga" and "Kiss Yoga" by Shakti Kaur. She was featured
in the article "Mary's Loft" by Trish Dalton in Ascent
Magazine in the fall 2001 issue. She directed and
co-directed teacher training programs in NYC in 2003-5. She
has lead national and international workshops in Tokyo,
Canada, and Costa Rica.
Mary teaches Ashtanga in the light of her Guru Shri K
Pattabhi Jois.
John McCarthy
John has been practicing yoga for 15 years and teaching Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga since 1999. He was trained by and worked and studied extensively with Manju Jois. Additionally, he spent many years working with Master Teacher and Practitioner Dee Silvers. John also spent an extended period of time in California practicing with Tim Miller. Additional training has come from workshops given by senior teachers David Swenson, David Williams, Beryl Bender Birch, and Doug Swenson. John has also extensively studied Anatomy and Physiology.
One of the greatest teachings John received from Manju was to make sure that students had fun while practicing. Manju often said that following the path of yoga as it was intended, teaches us not to take life, and correspondingly time spent on our mats, so seriously. While yoga is done in a peaceful space with inward focus, it also provides a time to experiment and have fun. While the primary, intermediate and advanced series of Ashtanga Yoga provide the backbone of the Mysore practice, John works with each individual student to develop a "custom" practice tailored to generate optimal well being and to ready them to move deeper into the Ashtanga sequences.
Heather Marie Miller
Heather Marie Miller has been studying yoga for 17 years. Some of her past teachers include Baron Baptiste, Dee Silvers, Jennifer McLaughlin and David Swenson. In 2004, Heather Marie completed a 200-hour teacher training with Corina Benner at Wake Up Yoga. For three years, her primary teacher has been David Keil, and she's excited to be going to New Zealand to study with David's teacher, John Scott, this winter.
Heather Marie studied philosophy, psychology, music and math in college, and attended graduate school in psychology, while working as a certified personal trainer and bodyworker.
Heather Marie first began teaching yoga at the Ben Franklin Clinic in Philadelphia. While running the fitness center at a retirement community, she taught yoga to the residents. For the last ten years, Heather Marie has taught students of all ages one-on-one.
When not practicing and teaching yoga and doing bodywork, Heather Marie loves to read, travel, listen to music, practice body rolling, and hang out with her husband and two cats.
Heather Marie teaches from her heart, having experienced the transformative energy of yoga personally and deeply in her life. She appreciates and shares the meditative aspects of ashtanga yoga by teaching using vinyasa counting in Sanskrit and focusing on the breath, and she encourages students to cultivate curiosity and compassion in place of judgments and distracting thoughts. She's very grateful to all of her teachers and guides along the way, as well as for the opportunity to teach and connect with others through yoga.
Naidia Borowsky
Naidia has been practicing yoga since 1994. In 2003 she began studying with esteemed Ashtanga master teacher and practitioner teacher Dee Silver where she was taught to assist during mysore practice and teach led and private classes.
In her early 20's she had the good fortune to meet and receive shaktipat (the transmission of spiritual energy) from Gurumayi Chidvilasananda, a spiritual and meditation master from the Siddha Yoga Linage. She has studied and practiced the teachings of Siddha Yoga for 25 years where she continues to have a daily practice of meditation, chanting and japa. Naidia says "Chanting is one of the most joyous practices" and it is through this practice that she has come to understand how the vibrational quality of a person can be elevated.
Naidia has been seriously committed to a holistic approach to life since 1980 while studying food, energy and our environment. She brings a wealth of information to students on how to support their practice through diet and meditation. She graduated in 1999 with a B.S. in Nursing from Villanova University and in 2005 she became a Reki Master. She is the mother of three amazing children.
Jill Manning
Jill Manning has devoted herself to the study, practice and teaching of yoga since 2000. She received her initial certification from Integral Yoga Institute in New York City, but has gone on to study with many of the world's most revered living yoga masters, including Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, with whom she has spent eight weeks at his yoga shala during her 2006 and 2007 trips to Mysore, India. Jill's other notable teachers and mentors include David Keil, Joan White and Rodney Yee.
A graduate of New York University, Jill has studied the intellectual aspects of yoga as well as the physical and spiritual ones. Her scholarly understanding of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Yoga Sutra's, along with other Shastras, brings an important dimension to her own practice as well as her teaching style. During her weeks traveling throughout India, Jill immersed herself in the country's culture (and the Great Ganga). She has studied Sanskrit with Manorama and with Sri Lakshmish Bhat of Mysore, India, to further round her understanding of the yoga tradition and to place an asana practice in a larger context for herself and her students.
In her classes, Jill achieves a focus on the mind-body connection by carefully orchestrating a series of poses that fit together as a beneficial whole. An emphasis on precise alignment is a hallmark of Jill's teaching style, a result of her experience with the Iyengar Yoga method. Jill has co-taught Wake Up Yoga's 250-hour Yoga Alliance registered teacher training program for the past four years. She practices the yoga of life and family in the East Falls section of Philadelphia with her husband, Mike, and their dog, Angie.

Iyengar
Caroline Cahill
Caroline Cahill began studying Iyengar yoga in 1991 with her primary teacher, Joan White, and has taught since 1996. She has completed intensive Teacher Training with Joan White and has also taken numerous workshops with other senior level Iyengar instructors, such as Mira Mehta and John Schumacher, and participated in the Yoga Journal Convention with BKS Iyengar in 2005.
Caroline received a bachelor's degree in painting and art history, and spent over ten years working at the University of Pennsylvania as the administrative coordinator for a large graduate program. It was while working at Penn that she first discovered the benefits of Iyengar yoga in classes with Joan White. For Caroline, Iyengar yoga provided a gradual physical transformation that lead to a much deeper personal transformation, as well as an intense devotion to the discipline, and a desire to share of benefits of Iyengar yoga with others through teaching.
Caroline has taught Iyengar yoga at the University of Pennsylvania since 1997, and at other locations both public and private throughout the Philadelphia area. Since leaving her administrative job in 1998, she has had two children while continuing with her study, practice and teaching.
Caroline teaches with a great amount of compassion for her students, and strives to help students to discover that Iyengar yoga is primarily about awareness, awareness of the specific movements of the body and the breath, as well as awareness of the alignment that underlies each posture. It is through awareness and attention that students can achieve a sense of grace in the pose, and begin to understand how Iyengar yoga can discipline and transform not only the body, but the mind.
Robin Lowry
Robin has been studying Iyengar yoga exclusively since 1986 and with Joan
White since 1987. Since undertaking the certification process Patricia
Walden has become her second mentoring teacher. She has studied with the
Iyengars in Pune three times, most recently the Summer of 2007.
Robin's teaching style is based on her study of the Yoga Sutras and the
syllabus designed and continuously refined by BKS Iyengar and his daughter
Geeta. Her perpetual participation within the Iyengar Yoga Teacher
Assessment process is cultivating her skills as both a student and teacher.
Robin is a doctoral candidate at Temple University researching yoga pedagogy
and teaches Health and Physical Education full-time at Simon Gratz High
School in Philadelphia. Robin has achieved 'Junior Intermediate I' in the Iyengar Teacher Assessment System.
Adinah Ghen
Philadelphia native, Adina Ghen arrived in NYC in 1974 as a student
in the Whitney Museum Independent Studio Program. Ms. Ghen remained
in New York as a full time artist for nearly twenty-five years
prior to becoming interested in self-health orientations. In
1993 she became a licensed massage therapist studying at the
Swedish Massage Institute and in 1995 she began practicing yoga.
In addition to maintaining a reflexology practice, Ms. Ghen has
taught yoga to others for the past 7 years. Currently, Ms. Ghen
teaches Iyengar (gentle) yoga at Integral Yoga Institute, Yoga
Sutra, and in her private yoga studio. Since 1997, Adina has been studying
with Brooke Myers a senior Iyengar teacher and she is currently
in her second year of Teacher Training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute
of New York. She
teaches gentle, fundamental, and level 1 yoga classes in the
Iyengar Tradition. Having just returned from the birthday celebration
and yoga workshop in India with Dr. Geeta Iyengar and Mr. BKS
Iyengar, she is scheduled to study for 6 weeks at the RIMYI Institute,
December-January 2006-07.
Jill Jones
Jill began to study yoga in the Iyengar tradition in 1994. The
Iyengar method's emphasis on inward focus through detailed alignment
in each asana, what B.K.S. Iyengar refers to as meditation in action,
is what immediately captivated Jill's interest in yoga and she
has remained a dedicated student of this method ever since. In
2002, reminded by a senior teacher of the importance of giving
back to the community, she started to teach and share with a then
budding Pittsburgh Iyengar community what she had learned from
her primary teacher, Joan White. Teaching has become an essential
part of the learning process and practice for Jill. Her goal in
teaching is to pass on the tradition as faithfully and passionately
as possible and to help spark passion for the subject of yoga & self-study
in others. Jill continues to train under Joan, as well as with
other senior Iyengar teachers as frequently as time and funds will
allow. In November of 2007 Jill passed her first Iyengar Certification
Assessment exam and will be continuing on to the next level of
assessment in the fall of 2008.

Hatha/Vinyasa
Jillian Bird
Jillian Bird has been studying Hatha yoga since 1992 and has been teaching
since 2003. Her primary influences have been teachers Deva Parnell,
Shoban Richard Faulds, Megha Nancy Buttenheim, Sudhir Jonathan Faust and the
many others of the Kripalu community.
In addition to teaching Kripalu yoga Jillian is currently practicing as a
holistic health counselor, utilizing various forms of massage, nutrition counseling
and such mindfulness based methods as meditation and yoga to support an individual
to reach their health and lifestyle goals.
Jillian's background in dance and the performing arts inform her teaching
style which focuses greatly on alignment and the joy of the moving body. Jillian
believes the answers for ones personal transformation lie within. Her
classes aim to create a supportive and safe environment wherein everyone can
create their perfect practice, align with the universe and feel greater joy
and connection in their lives.
Galit Carthy
Practicing yoga on her own since 1997 (guided by a book by BKS Iyengar), Galit
began her formal study of yoga with David Newman at Yoga on Main in Manayunk,
where she completed teacher's training program focusing on the spiritual and
devotional aspects of yoga. In 2003, after completing the teacher's
training program with Corina Benner at Wake Up Yoga, she began her teaching
journey.
Since 2003 Galit has focused her practice and study of the Iyengar system
mainly with Joan White and other Iyengar teachers such as Kofi Busia.
Inspired by her various teachers, Galit's approach to yoga teaching encourages
attentiveness to alignment and precision through which students cultivate mindfulness
in their practice, hopefully carried off the mat and into life.
Galit holds a master degree in Art History; she graduated from Wharton Management
Program and is also trained as a professional Chef (now happily cooking for her
friends and family).
Tara Culp
Tara encourages her students to uncover and discover the depths of who we
are through the practice of yoga. She received her certification from
It's Yoga in San Francisco in 2000. Her classes are inspired by the
amazing and devoted teachers that she had while living and teaching in New
York City, Dharma Mittra, Amy Ippoliti, Jyhoti larson and Rev. Frank Jude Boccio.
Tara is also a certified pre-natal instructor through Ma Yoga NYC.
Nora Drummond
Nora Drummond began practicing yoga in earnest in 2001, and has been teaching
full time since 2004. Her initial 200 hour teacher training was under
the tutelage of Yogiraj Alan Finger at BeYoga (now YogaWorks) in NYC. She
has also been greatly influenced and inspired by her studies with Rod Stryker,
A.G. and Indra Mohan, and Twee Merrigan.
Nora's yogic path began while attending the North Carolina School of The Arts
as a ballet major. When an injury forced her out of the dance studio
one of her teachers introduced her to a few yoga poses. The practice
which at first felt awkward and a little silly, became a refuge of healing
for both an injured body and an anxious mind. After graduation she moved
to New York City, and found her heart leading her up four flights of stairs
to Alan Finger's yoga class. The rest, as they say, is history.
Upon moving to Philadelphia in 2005 she has taught extensively throughout
the city. She has also created and implemented a 200 hour teacher training
course that has graduated 15 yoga teachers to date, all of which have taught
or are currently teaching in Philadelphia.
Nora went back to NYC to complete a Pre-Natal Yoga Training at YogaWorks,
and is also a trained Doula. In her prenatal classes she creates a nurturing
and fun atmosphere for woman to explore not only the changes in their bodies,
but also the changes in their lives.
Teri Gerbec
Teri Gerbec has been teaching yoga since 2004. She first turned to yoga
to balance out some of the physical implications of long-distance running.
But it was not long before she realized it served as a perfect balance for
so much more, including the rigors of working life, and the simple, day-to-day
trials of life in general. She received her teaching certification in
New York City at the Laughing Lotus College of Yoga under the tutelage of Dana
Flynn and Jasmine Tarkeshi, to whom she is very grateful for planting in her
the seeds that would sprout into a love of the yoga practice.
In her classes, Teri shares a spirited vinyasa sequence, linked with the breath
and complimented by music. By offering insights into the philosophy behind
the physical poses, Teri hopes to help her students find a hint of the peace
that yoga brings: one that can be found not only on the mat, but can also
be wrapped up to go.
Katy Hawkins
Katy Hawkins took her first yoga class in 2002 when pregnant with her first
child. She continued to study Vinyasa yoga in New York City until relocating
to Philadelphia in 2006, where her primary influences have been Jill Manning,
Corina Benner, and Sophie Simpson. She did her teacher training at Wake
Up Yoga.
While completing a Ph.D in Comparative Literature at New York University,
Katy's academic work began to take on a yogic flavor. Her dissertation
came to focus on how "Eastern" frameworks, especially Hindu and Mahayana
Buddhist influences, appear in several contemporary American studies of illness.
Katy studied modern dance from the age of four. In addition to collaborative
performances with members of Martha Graham, José Limon, Mary Anthony,
and Bill T. Jones companies, she has performed solo at several New York venues,
most recently a sequence of yoga poems set to movement and cello.
The two real keys to her soul and sanity are her partner Dan and a daily meditation
practice that has guided her through the wild and rugged wilderness of stay-at-home
motherhood.
Her teaching style is a Vinyasa flow (with Ashtanga and Iyengar influences)
colored by her keen interest in mindfulness practices.
Julia Horn
Julia Horn is not quite sure when it all began. From the time she was
just a squirt, she was swinging from the arms of an om'ing mother. Next
it was the limbs of the towering oak in the backyard. The rest is history.
What ensued was a lifetime of study and exploration of movement, breath and
the interior of the self. Her study of dance continued at North Carolina
School of the Arts and then on to Tisch School of the Arts in New York City. She's
had an eclectic mix of teachers along the way- more than she could name, but
to whom she will be ever grateful. Her love of music, dance, literature,
sculpture, theater, travel, and nature have all been equal informants to her
path of practice.
Julia grew up in the hills of Cakilaki (translation: Appalachian Mountains
of North Carolina) which she stills considers to be one of the most magical
places on earth.
She is currently a member of Tripsichore Yoga Theatre, with whom she trots
the globe for performances of yogic dance and workshops.
In her classes, Julia utilizes in equal parts movement (or stillness), breath,
and the steady beat of the musica (or silence) to dive in. To dive out. To
play. To explore. To sweat. And to eventually bring it
all back home- to the seat of the heart.
Brianna Jones
A Philadelphia native and seasoned New Yorker, Brianna's teachings are as
diverse as the influences that inspire her. She was introduced to yoga
at 16, it resonated with her because of how well it complemented her athletic
aptitude in track and field, distance running and rock climbing. After
one year of the obligatory college experience, she dismissed western institutionalization
to pursue a life outside of the mundane parameters of normalcy. By 21
years old, through the guidance of her beloved teachers, she fully immersed
herself in the mastery of asana and the study of yoga scripture and philosophy.
After much resistance to the concept, she received her 'certification' as
a vinyasa instructor but threads many other methods into her guidance to
the practice. As
a student, she views yoga as a divine and continuous unfolding. As a
teacher, her classes are challenging, informative, contemplative and humbling. Yoga
is a precious gem; in the state of it's growing popularity, Brianna's foundation
and focus is rooted in the necessary preservation of the teachings of the tradition.
Don Maiorano
Don Maiorano has studied Classical Hatha Yoga since 1982 with Dr. Pratop at
Sky Foundation Yoga School in Philadelphia.
He has been teaching since 1994 in Phila. Don takes a gentle approach while
teaching the asanas insisting you hold them for as long as you feel comfortable.
The benefits of each asana are explained as well.
Pranayama techniques are not ignored in his class.
As well as teaching Yoga, Don is a certified public school teacher in Philadelphia.
Tricia Sletten
Tricia Sletten has studied yoga since 1995 when she attended her first yoga
class in Fargo, North Dakota. After moving east to Philadelphia, she
continued to practice with Durga Das (David Newman), and eventually found her
way to the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health where she studied with Yoganand
Michael Caroll and Martha Abbott. She received her 200-hour Kripalu
Yoga Teacher Training in 2001. Tricia also has studied Thai yoga therapy
with Kam Thye Chow at Lotus Palm in Montreal, and Tanya Boigenzahn at the Yoga
Center of Minneapolis. Other major influences in her study and practice
of yoga include Judith Hanson Lasater, Scott Blossom, and Shiva Rea, with whom
Tricia is completing her 500-hour Prana Flow teacher training.
Possessing a strongly creative spark, Tricia has studied many forms of expression
from acting, singing, and classical ballet to writing and drawing, including
printmaking and painting. She has a Bachelors degree in English from
Moorhead State University (MN) and completed the four-year certificate in printmaking
from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
A lifelong student, Tricia continues to deepen her understanding and appreciation
of the Vedic origins of yoga and Ayurveda at the Kripalu School of Ayurveda
where she has studied with Drs. David Frawley, Claudia Welch, Jaye Apte, and
Vasant Lad.
In her work as an artist, yoga instructor, Thai yoga therapist, and Ayurveda
practitioner-in-training, Tricia is drawn to the practice and expression of
health and healing. Her focus in teaching is to explore the inherent
strength and flexibility of the body through disciplined awareness of the breath
(Prana Vayus). She encourages her students to embrace the innate creativity
of living yoga allowing it to express itself through the body. The result is
a fresh and dynamic approach to an ancient practice. Whatever their
level of practice, her goal is to bring each student to their 'edge' - the
place where they discover something new about themselves and their practice.
Kelly Smith
Kelly's journey in yoga began as a desire to change direction in life. Like
many yoga practioners, her yoga practice began as a search for peace and health,
and over time evolved into a way of life and source of love. Kelly's
dedication to teaching yoga is an extension of her commitment to her practice
as well as a response to a call for peace and health among people today. Kelly
is the founder of Inner Bliss Yoga Center, a welcoming center established to
provide a safe, nurturing and empowering place for anyone seeking physical,
mental or spiritual health.
An experienced Yoga and Pilates instructor, Kelly was recognized twice in
2005 by Philadelphia Magazine as one of the best in the city for both Yoga
and Pilates instruction. Her studies include multiple trainings in Shiva
Rea's fluent and powerful Vinyasa method, the freedom of Angela Farmer's intuitive
approach to yoga, and weekly classes with Joan White, a senior Iyengar teacher
living in Philadelphia. Kelly has completed trainings is many areas
of special interest including prenatal yoga, yoga for scoliosis and yoga therapy.
Kelly also studies Indian Ayurveda holistic nutrition, and is informed by
18 years of dance experience. She recently began Martial Arts training. She
holds a BA in Psychology from Villanova University and has taken many post-graduate
courses in the areas of psychology and kinesiology.
The style of yoga Kelly teaches is challenging and nurturing; incorporating
yoga philosophy and knowledge of the physical and subtle body. After
7 years of teaching yoga, Kelly believes this blend of balanced yoga will guide
students toward a deep experience of yoga on many levels.
Miko Doi Smith (Summer)

in management consulting. Al is thrilled about the prospect of
working closely with his son, David, to establish a genuine yoga
community in Philadelphia.
Al is indebted to all of his yoga teachers, without whose help
and caring his practice would have never come to happen. He strongly
believes that the only way to pay them back is to “pay
it forward.”
Al has been a resident of Center City, Philadelphia for 35 years.
Megan Weisman, Director of Operations
Megan began practicing yoga at an early age as an accompaniment
to her regular training as an ice dancer. Long after she hung
up her skates, she continued to deepen her practice as she earned
her BFA in acting from North Carolina School of the Arts. After
moving to New York City she worked as an actress in the theater
and on television. Megan moved to Philadelphia in July of 2007
and immediately fell in love with the city. She believes that
yoga is a vital component to a physically, mentally, and spiritually
balanced life.
Megan is thrilled to be a part of the Yoga Sutra family and
excited to help bring high quality yoga in to the lives of Philadelphians.
At Yoga Sutra, she oversees the managerial staff, daily operations
of the center, assists in programming, and gets done anything
else that needs to get done! Megan is very happily married to
David Weisman and lives in Old City.

taught and choreographed for a variety of different schools
and studios throughout the Philadelphia suburbs as well as
performed in several different productions with companies such
as Alchemy Dance Company right in Philadelphia. Her passion
and interest in yoga started after she realized she needed
something to help solidify and calm her body. Yoga helped her
